Pomba Gira (pronounced pohm-ba shee-ra) is a Brazilian feminine spirit found within several Afro-Brazilian spiritual traditions, most notably Quimbanda. I am not here to teach on Quimbanda as a practice. That is an initiatory tradition, and I respect the boundaries around it. The only reason I mention it is to give credit and context. We must always respect the roots of spiritual forces and understand the history behind them. While Pomba Gira is worked with within these traditions her energy exist outside as she is part of the spiritual realm and that is what I want to focus on here with my personal experience, knowledge and how I became to know of her.
A small disclaimer I am not an “expert” on Pomba Gira. Her knowledge is deep, layered, and there is so much depth to her also because of language barriers much of the information found outside of Brazil is simplified or watered down. I have found that Pomba Gira has wanted to exist out of Brazil and has expanded. Outside of Brazil, Pomba Gira is often talked about as if she is one singular entity. That was also my first understanding of her. Later, I learned that Exu is her counterpart but for today, we are focusing only on Pomba Gira. Exu is a conversation for another time.
How I First Met Her Energy
Pomba Gira did not come to me in a dream or vision. I first encountered her in my early 20s, walking into a botanica in Miami, Florida. I saw a statue of her depicted as a devil woman. I was deeply intrigued and curious in a way I couldn’t explain, but I don’t believe it was my time yet. Years later, in my mid 30s, I saw her statue again in a botanica in Chicago. That curiosity came back strong. I started searching for information and quickly realized how limited and watered-down most sources were. But I couldn’t shake the pull so I introduced myself her. I lit a red candle and spoke her name out loud. I told her I wanted to learn about her. Immediately, I felt a warm energy around me that stayed for several days. I didn’t receive words or messages, but I felt acknowledgement. To me, that felt like a yes. Over the next seven years, my relationship with her developed slowly and steadily. I left offerings at crossroads like wine, liquor, cigarillos. Every time I connected, I felt that same warmth. Eventually, I began petitioning her for confidence, love, and money and her responses were often fast. My development with her was slow, steady, and respectful. That is why I did not release Pomba Gira products in my shop for many years. I only release entity-based products when I have direct, consistent confirmation from them to move forward. That is my personal rule.
When She Revealed Herself More Deeply
Over time, I began sensing a feminine spirit in nature a beautiful woman with long hair. At first, I didn’t connect this presence to Pomba Gira, but this spiritual energy grew and guided me in my life. Later, I was guided to receive a reading from a Tata (a priest within Kimbanda). He revealed that Pomba Gira Das Matas walks with me. That was when everything clicked and she confirmed that it was her. Later, she revealed her personal name to me and our relationship has continued to grow.
Understanding Pomba Gira in a Broader Sense
In Brazil, Pomba Gira is understood as a collective of spirits often women who lived strong, knowledgeable lives, sometimes witches, sometimes women who carried deep worldly wisdom you can think of them as ancestral spirits. After crossing into spirit, they may join the current known as Pomba Gira. Within that current, there are many known and unknown paths such as: Maria Padilha, Pomba Gira das Almas, Pomba Gira Sete Saias (Seven Skirts), Pomba Gira Caveira (Skull) And many many more.
Within these paths, individuals may also have their own Pomba Gira who carries her own name like in my case. I know all of this starts to get a little confusing. It is said that we all have a Pomba Gira that walks with us. Some believe you must have Brazilian ancestry to have a Pomba Gira walking with you. Personally, I believe respect, intention, and heart matter most. We also don’t know who we may have been connected to ancestrally or spiritually across lifetimes or which of your ancestors may have had a Pomba Gira in which that case the Pomba Gira steps forward.
My Advice for Beginners
If you feel called to Pomba Gira, start by approaching her as one unified feminine force. Start by working with her energy as whole and with time she will guide you to a specific path of hers if it's needed. She will likely reveal herself in dreams, feelings or guide you to a source of information.
Working With Her Outside Closed Traditions
When working outside Afro-Brazilian initiatory systems, you are working with her essence, not attempting spirit incorporation or possession work. Think of sitting in front of a bonfire. You don’t put your hand directly into the flames. You respect it. You understand that fire can be dangerous. Instead, you will use its warmth and power wisely to help you. This is why sometimes you'll hear that Pomba Gira is dangerous but that's because she is a hot spirit so that means fast, intense, powerful, and direct. Spirit possession work is done within closed practices and must be respected. The most important thing is developing a relationship with her and allow her to guide you to knowledge that you need to develop your spiritual frame. Like many spirits/entities do not make promises you cannot keep. If you petition her with a glass of wine and promise her a whole bottle at the crossroads once she delivers your request, you better make sure you do as promise.
What She Is Known to Help With
Pomba Gira is often petitioned for: Love, Passion, Sexual Energy, Beauty, Confidence, Road opening, Money Protection, Trauma healing. She's often worked with for escort services, sugar daddy arrangements. She is fast-moving energy. I would petition her on Mondays for money, road opening, protection works and Friday for anything love and sex.
Offerings I Personally Give
This is my personal practice. I like to treat her like a fine lady only giving her the absolute best.
Fruity wine/champagne , Red roses without thorns. I came across this a long time ago and I have always taken the thorns off, Hard liquor, Long cigarettes or thin cigars, Fruits like strawberries, figs, pomegranates, etc., Chocolates, Beauty offerings (perfume, lipstick) Popcorn (traditionally popped in palm oil) or you can give her plain popcorn drizzled with palm oil. I personally do not offer water, as it is believed to cool or weaken hot spirits. Most important offerings must come from the heart.
How to Begin Connecting

If safe and respectful to your environment, offerings can be left at a four-way crossroads. Always be mindful of wildlife and surroundings so I usually don't leave chocolate as it can be toxic to wildlife. Over time, if the connection deepens, you may create a space for her in your home, but she does not demand an altar. Giving her a personal space in your home should be done from a place of honoring her. I have a client that has worked with her for many years within her limits and she's helped her through so much including her marriage.
Remember that it's all about how much you invest in her. You can also honor her by learning about her. Ask her for guidance on the information you find online and take what aligns with you. The most important thing though is connecting to her directly and letting her teach you. I often notice her presence as I feel warm, sensual and for me I smell roses and sometimes tobacco smoke.
